Adaptation to Climate Change in Seychelles
An important part of the adjust project is our work on the impacts of and adaptation to climate change in Seychelles. Our research consists of both modelling work on potential impacts of sea-level rise and questions related to adaptation and adaptation governance in Seychelles. In the context of our research, we organized two stakeholder workshops in 2022 and 2024 together with the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources of the Seychelles and the Seychellois NGO Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S).
In our impact analysis, we examine the potential impacts of flooding caused by sea-level rise and high tides for the three main islands Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. For three climate scenarios representing different global socioeconomic developments, we show which areas will be particularly exposed and how flooding will affect people, buildings, and roads. Our findings highlight the need for early adaptation planning, particularly on Mahé. The impact analysis is complemented by research on how Seychellois stakeholders perceive different adaptation measures such as hard protection or nature-based solutions and research on the governance of adaptation and adaptation finance in Seychelles.
